Shaykh Uthaymeen mentions: From the Rights of the Wife over her Husband -
The statement of Allah:
وَعَلَى الْمَوْلُودِ لَهُ رِزْقُهُنَّ وَكِسْوَتُهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
“And upon the [father] of the infant [ who is being suckled ] is the cost of the mothers food and clothing in a reasonable [manner].” [al-Baqarah: 233]
The Prophet said:
“For them [women/wives ] upon you [men/husband] is their provisions and clothing in a reasonable [manner].”
Related by [Muslim #1218]; at-Tirmidhi; [Ibn Maajah, Ibn Habbaan, at-Tabari and other than them.]
Also his ﷺ statement, when he was asked what is the right of a wife of one of us over us?
“That you feed her when you eat and cloth her when you cloth yourself, do not hit her in the face, do not disgrace her and do not abandon her except in the home.”
Related by Ahmad; Abu Dawud #2142; Ibn Maajah; [and other than them.]
And if there is more than one wife: to be just/equitable between them in spending upon them, living quarters and nights [between them]. And in everything that it is possible to be equitable in, for indeed [being] inclined/bias to one over the other is a major sin from the major sins [as] the Prophet mentioned:
من كان له امرأتان فمال إلى إحداهما جاء يوم القيامة و شقه مائل
“Whoever has two women [and] he is inclined/bias towards one of the two, he come [forth] Yaum-ul-Qiyaamah and half of his body leaning/bent.”
Related by Ahmad 1578; [Abu Dawud 2133; Nasaa'i #3952/3942; and other than them]
As for that which it is not possible to be impartial/equal in it, like love and tranquility of the soul, then surely there is no sin in it. Because is not [within ones] ability. [As] Allah the Most High said:
وَلَن تَسْتَطِيعُوا أَن تَعْدِلُوا بَيْنَ النِّسَاءِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتُمْ ۖ
“You will never be able to be impartial/completely just between women even if it is your avid desire...” [an-Nisaa': 129]
